SUMMARY:Deakin University School of Education and REDI: COVID-19 and the (broken) promise of education for sustainable development
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 and the (Broken) promise of education for sustainable development – a case study from postcolonial Pakistan. \nWednesday 10 May 2023\, 5.00pm – 6.00pm AEST (Australian Eastern Standard Time)\, 7.00am – 8.00am UTC \nOn-line Zoom webinar and book launch. \nRegister here. \nThis webinar\, and the book that frames it\, charts the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic\, and the impact that it has had on the lives of young people and their communities\, education systems\, the teaching profession\, governments and NGOs in postcolonial Pakistan. It is a case study of the ‘broken promise’ of education for sustainable development. \nDrawing on theories of postcolonialism\, feminism\, and neo-liberal globalisation\, the book explores the development of Pakistan as a postcolonial nation-state\, and examines the legacies of colonialism in education systems and policies\, teacher education and development.  \nCOVID-19\, the climate crisis\, and the crisis of development in the globalising\, neoliberal version of capitalism\, present profound challenges for meeting the already limited aspirations of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Numerous UN report cards point to the qualified success in relation to many of the SDGs and their associated targets – in the ‘over-developed’ neoliberal democracies\, and in the middle- and low-income economies. Indeed\, these crises have amplified the challenges associated with the development aspirations\, plans and policies of many postcolonial nation states\, and in particular Pakistan. \nThe study will have significant impact in post COVID-19 Pakistan\, South Asia more broadly\, and in other postcolonial development contexts around the world. \nSpeakers and Discussants\nChair: Professor Peter Kelly\, School of Education and REDI\, Deakin University (Australia). \nIntroductions: Dr Farid Panjwani\, Dean of the Aga Khan University-Institute for Educational Development (Pakistan). \nSpeakers: Dr Javed Anwar Shahwani\, Dr Sher Rahmat Khan and Dr Mir Zaman Shah\, RMIT University (Australia). \nDiscussants: Dr Hafeez Ahmed Jamali\, Director General of Balochistan Civil Service Academy (Pakistan) and Mr Ghulam Nabi Marri\, Economist with the UN-International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) (Pakistan). \nDetails about the book can be found here.

SUMMARY:EACLALS Europe Branch of ACLALS - Triennial Conference 2023
DESCRIPTION:Imagining environmental justice in a postcolonial world. Sorbonne Nouvelle University\, Paris\, France. \nThe 18th triennial conference of the European Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies (EACLALS)\, takes place in Paris\, 6-10 June 2023. The initiative is supported by the French Society for Postcolonial Studies (SEPC/Société des Études Postcoloniales) and Sorbonne Nouvelle University\, which will provide the venue for the event. The EACLALS conference was last held in France in 1988\, in Nice. \nFurther information can be obtained here and from: EACLALS2023@sorbonne-nouvelle.fr \nRegistration details are available here. \nConfirmed keynote speakers:\nAmanda Boetzkes (University of Guelph\, Canada)\nElizabeth DeLoughrey (University of California\, Los Angeles\, US)\nGraham Huggan (University of Leeds\, UK)\nClaire Omhovère (Université Paul Valéry – Montpellier 3\, France)\nImre Szeman (University of Toronto Scarborough\, Canada) \nThe conference theme for 2023\, Imagining Environmental Justice in a Postcolonial World\, invites delegates to bring postcolonial literatures and arts into conversation with environmentalism; investigate the power of narratives in all literary genres\, as well as images and artistic performances\, to evoke environmental injustice; and explore the breadth of what environmental justice may mean in postcolonial contexts. \nThe global ecological and climate crisis is strongly linked to modernity and its history of imperialism\, colonisation\, capitalism\, and exploitation of resources. Postcolonial literatures\nforeground these connections: key texts include Nadine Gordimer’s The Conservationist (1974)\,\nJudith Wright’s “For a Pastoral Family” (1985)\, Patricia Grace’s Potiki (1986)\, Thomas King’s\nGreen Grass\, Running Water (1999)\, Amitav Ghosh’s The Hungry Tide (2005)\, Alexis Wright’s\nCarpentaria (2006)\, Helon Habila’s Oil on Water (2011)\, Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner’s “Tell Them”\n(2012)\, Uzma Aslam Khan’s Thinner than Skin (2012)\, and Imbolo Mbue’s How Beautiful We\nWere (2021). These powerful stories reveal the colonial origins of ecological devastation and its\ndramatic consequences for the Global South. These texts have also prompted new theoretical\nconcepts such as the “slow violence” of delayed destruction (Nixon 2013) and the\n“plantationocene” (Haraway 2015).

SUMMARY:Indian Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies (IACLALS) - Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:Metropolis and margins: shifting perspectives in literary and language studies. \nOn-line Annual International Conference 2023 of IACLALS\, the Indian Chapter of ACLALS. April 27-29\, 2023. \nThe Conference is open only to members of IACLALS – visit the website here to learn how to become a member. Register for the Conference by March 25. \nAbout: ‘Metropolis’ and ‘margins’\, ‘centre’ and ‘peripheries’ are concepts that enable us to imagine multiple configurations of power-relationships of enablement and disablement. They are deployed to signify positions of dominance and subjugation. The metropolis is taken to be the centre\, the repertoire of knowledge systems and world views that command attention and deference while the margins\, by their very definition\, inhabit the periphery and often have a complex relationship with the metropolis\, ranging from seeking sanction/ approval from it to questioning the very legitimacy of this unequal relationship. Metropolis is also an empowered urban space providing hubs for writers\, publishers\, literary journals\, thus producing debates\, introducing newness\, and generating innovative trends that the margins witness with alternating attitudes of reverence and resistance and try to replicate or replace. With the forces of decolonisation moving apace the shifting axes of metropolis and margins created new configurations in which earlier paradigms and tools of canonization are challenged/revisited and new paradigms imagined and accommodated. This\, by its very nature\, remains a work in progress and attempts must be made periodically to assess the paradigms and examine their validity. The IACLALS annual conference 2023 will be an attempt to further the discourse in this direction.
