SUMMARY:Deakin University School of Education and REDI: COVID-19 and the (broken) promise of education for sustainable development
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 and the (Broken) promise of education for sustainable development – a case study from postcolonial Pakistan. \nWednesday 10 May 2023\, 5.00pm – 6.00pm AEST (Australian Eastern Standard Time)\, 7.00am – 8.00am UTC \nOn-line Zoom webinar and book launch. \nRegister here. \nThis webinar\, and the book that frames it\, charts the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic\, and the impact that it has had on the lives of young people and their communities\, education systems\, the teaching profession\, governments and NGOs in postcolonial Pakistan. It is a case study of the ‘broken promise’ of education for sustainable development. \nDrawing on theories of postcolonialism\, feminism\, and neo-liberal globalisation\, the book explores the development of Pakistan as a postcolonial nation-state\, and examines the legacies of colonialism in education systems and policies\, teacher education and development.  \nCOVID-19\, the climate crisis\, and the crisis of development in the globalising\, neoliberal version of capitalism\, present profound challenges for meeting the already limited aspirations of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Numerous UN report cards point to the qualified success in relation to many of the SDGs and their associated targets – in the ‘over-developed’ neoliberal democracies\, and in the middle- and low-income economies. Indeed\, these crises have amplified the challenges associated with the development aspirations\, plans and policies of many postcolonial nation states\, and in particular Pakistan. \nThe study will have significant impact in post COVID-19 Pakistan\, South Asia more broadly\, and in other postcolonial development contexts around the world. \nSpeakers and Discussants\nChair: Professor Peter Kelly\, School of Education and REDI\, Deakin University (Australia). \nIntroductions: Dr Farid Panjwani\, Dean of the Aga Khan University-Institute for Educational Development (Pakistan). \nSpeakers: Dr Javed Anwar Shahwani\, Dr Sher Rahmat Khan and Dr Mir Zaman Shah\, RMIT University (Australia). \nDiscussants: Dr Hafeez Ahmed Jamali\, Director General of Balochistan Civil Service Academy (Pakistan) and Mr Ghulam Nabi Marri\, Economist with the UN-International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) (Pakistan). \nDetails about the book can be found here.

SUMMARY:Institute of Commonwealth Studies (ICwS) Lecture: The Commonwealth Charter and its contemporary relevance
DESCRIPTION:‘The Commonwealth Charter and its contemporary relevance’. \nHybrid event: In-person (booking required) in IHR Wolfson Room NB01\, Basement\, IHR\, Senate House\, Malet Street\, London WC1E 7HU & Online-via Zoom \nKeynote Lecture as part of the Soft Power in the Contemporary Commonwealth Conference. Speakers: \nHon. Michael Kirby (former Justice of the High Court of Australia) \nRt Hon Sir Malcolm Rifkind (chair of the Committee investigating Commonwealth Studies at the University of London.) \nIn 2009-11\, the Hon Michael Kirby served as a member of the Eminent Persons Group (EPG) of the Commonwealth of Nations. The group was chaired by Tun Abdullah Badawi (former Prime Minister of Malaysia) and included 10 noted luminaries of the Commonwealth\, including Sir Malcolm Rifkind (former British Foreign Secretary). \nThe origins of the Commonwealth Charter were somewhat unpromising – drafted by Michael Kirby on a long plane journey back to Australia\, using airline paper napkins to record his thoughts. The EPG agreed that his text should be included in their Report which was released at the CHOGM in Perth in 2011. It eventually came into effect with the approval of all Commonwealth countries. \nThis lecture will describe the unpromising origins\, its contents and prospects. Strengths and weaknesses of a soft power document of this kind will be explored. It is Kirby’s belief that\, if the future of the Commonwealth is to be assured\, it must rest on universally endorsed values that can be enforced and influential\, rather than on purely historical considerations that are bound to be even more controversial. \nRegister for the event here. \nThis keynote event will be delivered in person in the Wolfson Suite\, Institute of Historical Research\, School of Advanced Study\, University of London. It will also be livestreamed and recorded.
